Jack and Jill scholarships for GMIT students

The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation have officially launched a new scholarship programme for students of GMIT Castlebar Campus which will be funded through the collection of unwanted mobile phones. The new scholarships, valued at €1,000 each, will be awarded to students who have played an active part in fundraising and awareness raising for charities, with these students nominated by staff and students of the Castlebar Campus and the winner selected by an independent panel.

Creative writing night classes in Castlebar

A new course of night classes in creative writing will commence in GMIT Castlebar for the spring. The course runs one night a week for 12 weeks and each class lasts two hours. The classes will suit beginners and improvers.

GMIT student innovation winners

GMIT Castlebar has announced its student innovation winners. First prize went to Joanne Clarke from Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, a second year student on the BSc in architectural technology. She was awarded a prize of €1,000 cash and incubation space in the GMIT Innovation Centre for two months. Second prize was awarded to Diarmuid Higgins from Rush, Co Dublin, who is a second year student on the BA in outdoor education. He won €600. Both prizes are sponsored by APC and AIB.

GMIT Castlebar suspending some construction

GMIT has admitted that following a review of programmes in all campuses some courses in Castlebar may have to be suspended because of the acute decline in the construction sector.

Following what Labour candidate Dr Bernie Courtney describes as “having ruffled a few feathers” at GMIT, Castlebar, leading to her being informed that she would be removed from the liaison committee of GMIT Castlebar Campus, Dr Courtney has in fact been given unanimous support from the Mayo VEC committee last Thursday night. The committee, who reserve the function to appoint and remove members, instructed that Dr Courtney would continue as its representative in GMIT and to attend the next meeting of the liaison committee which took place on Wednesday.
